Northern District of California
Update on Court Proceedings, Operations, and Safety Protocols (Updated May 6, 2022)
Effective August 2, 2021, and until further notice, all visitors to any Northern District of California courthouse must review the court’s COVID-19 pre-screening questionnaire before arriving at the courthouse.
Masking requirements in the Courthouses and Federal Buildings in the Northern District of California respond to changes in the status of community transmission and are set per guidance from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Mask and physical distancing requirements for individual courtrooms will continue to be determined by the assigned judge.
Until further notice, the intake counters and public terminals at each divisional courthouse will be open Monday – Friday, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. Drop boxes will remain available while public counters are open. The San Francisco courthouse dropbox has been relocated to the 16th Floor.

Pretrial and Setting for Trial
- Early Neutral Evaluation (“ENE”) Conference
Within forty-five (45) days of the filing of an answer, counsel and the parties must appear before the assigned judge for an early neutral evaluation conference, this appearance must be made with complete authority to discuss and enter into settlement.
