Tips for Using The Bluebook

The Bluebook LPI Tip Number Three

by Elle Chaseton

I have my grandmother’s old Better Homes and Garden’s Cookbook. You remember the one – just like the black binders the attorneys love to have prepared for them except the Cookbook has that welcoming red plaid cover. Unfortunately, there are not any family secrets inside. The only time she used it was to look at the inside of the front and back covers. For her cheat sheets of the two T’s of cooking: temperature and time. My grandmother cooked everything from scratch and memory. She didn’t need to look up a whole recipe but used a cheat sheet to check herself on the execution.

I don’t cook, and would need way more than a cooking cheat sheet. to accomplish a dish. I do know legal briefs though. I have The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation. It is with me constantly. At this point in my legal career while I use my Bluebook almost daily, it is usually for the inside back cover. That is my cheat sheet. A quick look at the inside back cover can confirm and answer just about any legal citation question. In addition, the Bluebooks Index is P-H-E-N-O-M-E-N-A-L. Also, the actual BLUE pages of the Bluebook are extended cheat sheets.

So, when you need a quick reminder, consult these materials in order: (1) Bluebook’s inside back cover; (2) Bluebook’s Index; and (3) Bluebook’s Bluepages.
