The Supreme Court of the United States has adopted a revised version of the Rules of the Court. The revisions to the Rules are necessary to implement the Court’s electronic filing system. The revised version will take effect on November 13, 2017 when the electronic filing system will begin operation.
New Rule 29.7 provides that filers who are represented by counsel must submit documents through the electronic filing system in conformity with “Guidelines for the Submission of Documents to the Supreme Court’s Electronic Filing System” issued by the Clerk. Because the submission of a paper version of a document remains the official filing as under existing practice, this requirement is in addition to the filing requirements set forth elsewhere in the Rules. The “Guidelines” document is being released today along with these Rules amendments, and provides details about the logistics and requirements for electronic filing.
Other amendments are also designed to support and accommodate electronic filing.
The revisions are available on the Court’s website: https://www.supremecourt.gov/filingandrules/rules_guidance.aspx.
