The Sacramento Superior Court and the County Probation Department are pleased to announce that the Judicial Council of California approved $9.5 million dollars in grant funding today to Sacramento and an additional $58.5 million dollars to 15 other counties in the state which will support the implementation of a two-year Pretrial Release Pilot Program.
In November 2018, the Court formed a multi-agency, pretrial release work group to develop an implementation plan for Senate Bill 10 and later to apply for grant funding to participate in a pre-trial pilot program. The Probation Department will use the Public Safety Assessment (PSA) tool for the pre-trial program. The assessment tool relies on accurate predictors of returning to court and ensuring public safety.
The pretrial release work group anticipates many positive impacts on its local justice systems. The use of the PSA will not rely on factors such as race, ethnicity, ability to pay, or geography and will provide recommendations for release to judicial officers enabling them to make informed decisions that balance the Constitutional presumption of innocence while providing protections to our community.

The first phase of the pilot project will focus on individuals booked into custody for relatively low-level offenses, property and drug crimes. As the pilot process matures, systematic improvements to the program will occur.
