This Federal holiday originally known as George Washington’s birthday was initially celebrated on his birthday February 22 beginning in 1879. It wasn’t until the 1968 Uniform Monday Holiday act that it was moved to the third Monday in February to provide a set three-day weekend. The Federal holiday is a day to remember all U.S. presidents.
