Everybody has probably heard about Galentine’s Day – but what is it? Galentine’s Day, celebrated February 13, is all about positive, empowering vibes and female friendship. It’s not just for singles! But how did it get started? We can look to the fictional character Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler, from the show Parks and Recreation. Leslie coined the term during the second season of that show in 2010. She described it as, “the best day of the year.”
Galentine’s Day can be whatever a given friend group wants it to be. It can be celebrated over brunch, lunch, or dinner. A spa day or girls’ night out are also good ways to celebrate. It can be a day dedicated to showering your besties with love!
Here are some ideas to celebrate the women friends in your lives.
- Plan a Weekend Staycation. Chances are you don’t have to go far to enjoy good food or interesting sights. Take a day or two to enjoy your own backyard and appreciate what is close by.
- Trade-off Being the Hostess with the Mostest by scheduling future meetups at different locations. Give each friend in the group a chance to host the rest of the group in their own way.
- If you are all avid readers, try a book exchange! A cookie exchange might be more popular! How about an exchange of your favorite things?
- Dinner Out is always fun. Lunch and Brunch are good alternatives!
- If the group of friends is not close by, consider a virtual event. Homemade Hot Cocoa Bombs made by each member of the group, or perhaps a cocktail, and enjoyed over a Zoom call could get everyone in the Galentine’s Day spirit!
- An afternoon tea, whether at your favorite tea room or hosted by a member of the group is an excellent way to catch up with your BFFs.
- Learn something new! Whether signing up for a class with your Galentine group, or one member of the group can teach the others a new craft or cooking skill, it’s always more fun to learn something with others.
These are just a few ideas for a fun and festive Galentine’s Day! However you celebrate, I think you’ll agree that fun and friendship are worth celebrating!
