At the November Conference, President Rod started the discussion about the structure of future conferences. LPI has been losing money at conferences for a few reasons, but mostly because attendance is down. Each hotel contract has guarantees, such as hotel room reservations and food and beverage minimums. Rod has negotiated the heck out of our recent hotel contracts, but if we don’t get the attendance, we won’t be able to meet the minimums.

So we are putting this out to all of the membership for your ideas on how to mitigate the damages and still provide education and networking. Think about the education you have received in the past and friends and connections you have made by going to conference. How can we bring people back, or bring in new people?

Money is a language that everyone can understand and I think we need to expand the query further. If you have attended at least 5 LPI conferences in the past, was this an out of pocket expense to you, or was this reimbursed by your employer?

SCCoLPA paid for me as President of SCCoLPA from 2010-2014, and I have been on the LPI leadership team in some capacity since 2011, and LPI has paid for me. Any incidental out-of-pocket expenses paid to attend a conference before I became a member of the EC were paid for by me. That said, If I asked my boss, she would have paid the expenses.
